ST. LOUIS (BaseballStL) – The St. Louis Cardinals drafted the sons of manager Mike Matheny and third base coach Jose Oquendo on the final day of the First-Year Player Draft.
Tate Matheny was selected in the 23rd round despite his father’s preference for the team not to draft the recent high school graduate of Westminster Christian Academy. Matheny batted .610 with eleven home runs and 51 runs batted in during his senior season. On Tuesday, Matheny told reporters his son was leaning toward playing collegiate baseball at Missouri State University next year.
The Cardinals also selected shortstop Eduardo Oquendo, who played collegiate baseball at Olney Central College in Illinois, in the 32nd round of the draft.
The team also selected outfielder Derrick May, son of minor league hitting instructor Derrick May, in the 37th round. May played baseball at Tatnall School in Delaware.
