ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – The female caretaker for a 67-year-old north St. Louis man has been charged with his death.

Darlene Coulibaly, 48, was charged with first-degree assault and elderly abuse.

Police said Howard Spracher had visible injuries throughout his body and appeared malnourished when he was found unresponsive in his house in the 3800 block of Labadie about 10 p.m. Tuesday.

He was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The medical examiner reported that the victim had bruises and unhealed fractures in his hands and feet.

Police say that Coulibaly told detectives that she took care of Spracher, and admitted to hitting him with her fists and other objects over an extended period of time.

The apartment belonged to Coulibaly, and she was allowing Spracher to stay with her.

Neighbors say the two kept to themselves and the victim was seen occasionally walking to a nearby store and sitting on the front porch.

A family member of Coulibaly states the two were not having a romantic relationship.

The medical examiner is still looking into the cause of the Spracher’s death, and police say more charges could come out of this investigation.
