SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois lawmakers are convening a special session as called for by Gov. Pat Quinn.

Legislators are expected to move forward with plans to form a bipartisan committee that will work for a compromise on pension reform. The committee was announced after it became clear lawmakers wouldn’t break an impasse over whether the Senate or the House pension reform plan should be approved by the Legislature.

House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton will meet with Quinn on Wednesday morning to discuss the committee. Both chambers would need to vote to establish the 10-member panel before day’s end. Quinn’s spokeswoman says the governor plans to call lawmakers back in July to vote on any compromise that’s reached.

The state’s $97 billion pension shortfall is the worst in the nation.
