Worker killed while performing repairs on Blanchette Bridge in St. Charles

 (KMOV) – Officials canceled work on the Blanchette Bridge in St. Charles County following an accident that killed a worker Monday morning.

According to authorities, a worker was killed after a barrel being lifted by a crane fell on the them.

The accident happened around 10:30 a.m. on the riverfront near the staging area for the bridge work. 

The worker was pronounced dead at  the scene.

Further details into this incident were not immediately known. The Robertson Fire Department is handling this investigation.

Crews planned to close one lane of Interstate 70 southbound at Fifth Street Monday night as they began a three-week long repair project.

News 4 learned of past violations with Walsh Construction, prior to Monday's deadly accident. 

Two safety violations are listed against Walsh Construction through Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA.)

One of the violations listed had to do with working over a body of water.

News 4 also learned that the company has paid about $8,500 in workplace safety fines since 2010. 

At this time, Walsh Contractors have canceled their scheduled work. They have released the following statement:


"Our deepest, heartfelt sympathy is extended to the friends and family of the deceased, and our thoughts and prayers are with them. The safety and security of our employees is of utmost importance to the Walsh family. Work has been halted while the company focuses on providing support to co-workers and friends on the project. A thorough investigation has begun to determine the cause of this accident."
