EDWARDSVILLE, IL (KMOV) – Residents who have conducted business with the City of Edwardsville are encouraged to check their bank statements.

The City of Edwardsville has been informed that its customers may have had their credit cards compromised following information obtained from its credit processing firm.

According to Jay Keevan, Director of Police in Edwardsville, the city received a list of approximately 6,000 names of individuals who may be vulnerable.

Currently, the focus is on those cards used to purchase tickets for performances at the historic Wildey Theatre located in Downtown Edwardsville.

The city is not yet aware of the extent of the compromise.  However, investigators are working with credit card firms, their security operations, and vendors with whom the city has contracts.

The city has been assured by its credit processing firm that steps have been taken to prevent future intrusions into its system.

Although remaining hopeful the breach is not serious, city officials felt it necessary to advise the public of the incident.

The city has no indication the breach included transactions for utility bills, ambulance runs, municipal courts fines or fees collected by the Edwardsville Police Department.

If you have conducted any business with the city through a credit card, excluding the above, authorities strongly suggest contacting your card provider and monitor your account records and purchases.
