Cardinals Spring Training: Fifth starter spot competition begins

Jupiter, Fla. (KMOV) - The St. Louis Cardinals hope to capture their first victory of spring training today, as they "host" their complex-counterparts, the Florida Marlins, in a rematch of Saturday's game.

The Redbirds head into the game with a Grapefruit League record of 0-3.

The big storyline going into today's matchup is RHP Kyle McClellan and LHP Rich Hill making their spring training debuts. Both McClellan and Hill are vying for the fifth spot in the Cardinals starting rotation. McClellan will make the start and Hill should follow soon thereafter.

McClellan is presumed to be one of the favorites to win the fifth starter spot in the pitching rotation, and a good outing certainly would bode well for his chances going forward.

Flipping over to the other side of things, today's lineups have been posted. First baseman Albert Pujols has the day off, but besides "Sugar" Shane Robinson starting (1st start of Spring) at CF and Nick Stavinoha at DH, the lineup closely resembles what you expect to see on Opening Day if Brendan Ryan can't make the start.

Here are the lineups:

St. Louis Cardinals -

1. Julio Lugo, SS
2. Felipe Lopez, 2B
3. Ryan Ludwick, Rf
4. Matt Holliday, LF
5. Yadier Molina, C
6. David Freese, 3B
7. Nick Stavinoha, DH
8. Joe Mather, 1B
9. Shane Robinson, CF

Florida Marlins -

1. Cameron Maybin, CF
2. Donnie Murphy, 2B
3. Hanley Ramirez, Ss
4. Jorge Cantu, 3B
5. Gaby Sanchez, 1B
6. Brett Carroll, RF
7. Bryan Petersen, LF
8. Brett Hayes, C
9. Sean West, LHP

As for the Cardinals pitchers, here are the Cardinals expected to play after McClellan (in no particular order): Rich Hill, Blake Hawksworth, Dennys Reyes, Josh Kinney, and Tyler Norrick

Emergency arms: Jason Motte, Trever Miller, and Pete Parise.
