Supporters call it a fair tax. The idea is to do away with the income tax in Missouri and replace it with a sweeping sales tax that would hit everything, everytime you spend money. Including higher sales tax on food, plus sales tax on services, even doctor visits.
Opponents say it's not fair. Making poorer people who obviously pay less in income tax, pay the same as wealthier citizens when they buy groceries.
This battle is being made in the state senate, where many are already attaching exemptions for private school tuition, insurance premiums and purchases for charities.
Expect more exemptions and expect to hear amore bout this in the coming weeks.
