A spokesman for Cardinal Glennon Hospital says last year they reported more than 450 cases of suspected child abuse. Not every case turns out to be child abuse, but one this week has led to a charge involving a Belleville man, who allegedly abused a 2 year old girl who is now fighting to stay alive.
The signs that doctors and nurses at Glennon look for include, inconsistent stories from parents, repeated ER visits, multiple bruises, and a history of injuries. Typically when a staffer suspects abuse they call in a social worker, who then talks with the family. Then the social worker compares notes with the doctor and if it's deemed necessary the police and children's services are notified.
