Jupiter, Fl (KMOV) - It was another windy day here at the Roger Dean Stadium complex, which is becoming the norm when pitcher Chris Carpenter throws live batting practice.
For the third time this Spring, Carpenter was scheduled to throw through constant high velocity winds. The former Cy Young Award winner struggled, too. Whether or not the wind was the reason remains in question. Carp had trouble locating his pitches, issuing a couple walks and letting up a couple would-be hits. As I said in one of my previous entries, though, you can't overreact to one of these live batting practice sessions.
The rest of the day was pretty standard as far as newsworthy items go. It's obvious players and coaches are are chomping at the bits for exhibition games to begin.
Said manager Tony La Russa this morning on the importance of exhibition games: "No matter how closely you watch practice and how many different things you practice, there's nothing like evaluating under game conditions...You can practice like a champ, but then play like a chump."
