Earlier in the NFL combine weekend Rams General Manager Billy Devaney essentially said that the Rams had narrowed it down to four players to be the top pick in the NFL Draft. After the performance by Ndamukong Suh at the Combine today I don't see how the Rams can't draft Suh if they are not going to select a quarterback. In short Suh separated himself from Gerald McCoy.
Before this weekend there were many, including Mike Mayock and Todd McShay, who believed that McCoy was a better NFL prospect then Suh. After the results today I don't know how you can continue to believe that.
In two of the tests that really mattered to how Defensive Tackles are evaluated, Suh easily beat out McCoy. Suh beat out McCoy in the bench press by doing 32 reps of 225 lbs while McCoy only did 23. For reference that is well below the average of 28.
In the vertical jump Suh had a 35.5 inch vertical jump which was the highest by a defensive lineman in a decade. This was 5 inches more then McCoy could produce. The reason vertical jump is important is it shows explosiveness in your legs which is also very important for a defensive lineman.
The only measurement that McCoy was better than Suh was in the 40. Suh ran a 4.98 which is very fast for a defensive lineman while McCoy, who is lighter, ran a 4.96.
