KMOV.com's Brendan Marks has started a new feature down at Cardinals Spring Training called "Prospect Profiles." The goal of the new section is to give Cardinal fans the info they need to become familiar with future Redbirds.
Jupiter, Fl (KMOV) - St. Louis Cardinals prospect Jon Jay was drafted in the 2nd round by the Cardinals in the June, 2006 First-Year Player Draft.
Jay, who was a big part of the AAA Memphis Redbird team that won the Pacific Coast League title in 2009, is fighting for spot on the major league roster this spring.
At Memphis last year, he ended up with a line of .281/.333/.394 with 10 homers and 20 stolen bases. He followed up with an even better peformance in the Venezualan Winter League, posting a line of .323/.418/.431 in 130 AB's
According to Scout.com,
"Jay is a very polished hitter with an interesting swing. He has a lot of motion including a hitch of sorts at the top of his swing that he uses as a timing mechanism. He has superb speed along with great range in the outfield. He has a below average arm and below average power. He projects to be a corner outfielder with the Cardinals so he would have to hit for a high average to make up for his lack of power."
I talked to Jon about what it was like being around all these major leaguers in his second big league camp.
