SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- More Illinoisans appear to be hitting the college books to improve their chances of landing a good job.
The Illinois Community College Board has released figures showing the number of people enrolling in community colleges is at an all-time high.
It says statewide, the headcount of community college students is more than 390,000, a nearly 8 percent increase from last year.
The chairman of the Illinois Community College Board, Guy Alongi, says the continuing economic crisis and high unemployment rate is, in his words, "driving people to our doors."
He says the figures demonstrate the importance of keeping community colleges well-equipped to handle the demand.
