Jupiter, Fl (KMOV) - There were some great matchups during team workouts Thursday, In what was cleary the coolest and windiest day in Jupiter since camp started.
As I mentioned in a previous post, pitchers Chris Carpenter and Brad Penny threw their first live batting practice sessions of the Spring. The two didn't throw against scrubs either, both going up against the likes of Matt Holliday, Ryan Ludwick, and Colby Rasmus, among others.
Carpenter was his usual self, throwing consistenly for strikes and keeping the batters on their heels with a good mix of pitches. Nothing new here.
Like most in attendance, I was eager to see Penny throw for the first time against live hitters. And let me tell you, he didn't disappoint. Penny mixed up his pitches well, and showed both a high-octane fastball mixed with some nice offspeed stuff. Hitters were off-balance (including Holliday and Ludwick), which is a good sign this early in camp. I'm not positive, but I don't think Penny even gave up a "hit" (There really isn't any hits, per se, but you can assume a hit based on where the ball lands).
