BELLEVILLE, IL -- A fire erupts in a Metro East home while you were sleeping.
It started before 3:30 a.m. on E Belle Ave near 161 in Belleville. All lanes of 161 were shut down at that intersection for nearly 4 hours while fire crews work to extinguish remaining hot spots.
No one was home and no one was injured in the fire.
Fire fighters say the home was being rehabbed but is now completely destroyed.
Fire fighters tell News 4 the fire started somewhere on the first floor in the back of the home, then shot up through the attic, causing the roof to collapse and burn.
A second alarm was sounded for more fire fighters to help battle the blaze, which the fire chief says had been burning "for quite some time" before anyone noticed and called 911.
