(KMOV) -- The Food and Drug Administration is accused of ignoring its own research about the diabetes drug Avandia.
A confidential FDA report stated that as many as 500 patients a month could have heart attacks if given Avandia as opposed to a similar drug. But instead of acting on that, investigators say FDA bosses ordered new tests which are still ongoing.
Scientists in the original study have called that move manipulative and unethical.
Glaxo-Smith-Kline manufactures the drug. In a statement released on Saturday, the company said that Avandia will remain available "as long as patients are made aware of the risks."
