Jupiter, Fla (KMOV) - Adam Wainwright and Kyle Lohse, two of the five starting pitchers, threw mound sessions Friday. So did Kyle McClellan and Jaime Garcia, who are competing for the fifth spot in the rotation.

For the bullpen sessions, pitchers are broken up into groups of three and four. Today's first group was Wainwright, McClellan, and Kyle Lohse. Reliever Dennys Reyes, newcomer Rich Hill, and youngster Blake Hawksworth pitched in the second group. Garcia and Josh Kinney threw in the third.

On the other side of the complex, hitting coach Mark McGwire worked closely during batting practice with position players who arrived early. Colby Rasmus, who arrived late Thursday afternoon, got in his first batting practice of the Spring (I'll have video of him hitting up here later this afternoon). Joe Mather, who GM John Mozeliak said will be competing for the open third base spot, is back to 100 percent after missing a lot of time last year with a wrist injury. It was obvious Mather was back to normal when watching him take BP, as he took some "healthy" cuts.

Check out the photos of today's action on the right and be sure to keep an eye out for video of Rasmus and Mather taking BP. I'll have them put up later today right here on our spring training section.
