(KMOV) -- Marla Bowles was walking along a country road near Potosi looking for cans when she spotted a plastic shopping bag.
It was at the edge of the water on a creek bank with several puppies inside. Bowles got in touch with Mostly Mutts, a west St. Louis county animal rescue that specializes in newborn puppies.
Director of Mostly Mutts Kelly Pavlack said this isn't out of the ordinary to get rid of unwanted litters of dogs by drowning them.
Five of the seven puppies made it. The pups will be cared for until they are 8 weeks old and will then be put up for adoption.
