(KMOV) -- A seven-month-old baby is dead after crews pulled the body from a vehicle submerged in River Des Peres.
Authorities say passerby Todd Gilliam reported seeing the back end of a Dodge Dynasty sticking out of the river around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Gilliam flagged down another car and had that person watch his three-year-old daughter while he dove into the water. Gilliam was able to pull a 24-year-old man from the vehicle.
Rescue crews dove into the water and found an infant strapped into a car seat, but they were too late. The baby, Trenton Payne, had died. Trenton, of the 6600 block of Arsenal, is the son of the driver.
Authorities say the 24-year-old was taken to Barnes Hospital and is listed in critical and unstable condition.
The cause of the accident is not clear and it may not be determined for several weeks. It could take that long to analyze the accident scene and gather toxicology and medical information.
Investigors are still trying to figure out what led to the crash. They say they did not notice brake marks on the road, so it is difficult to say if the driver lost control or if something else caused the accident.
The driver's name is not being released at this time.
