(KMOV)-- Police are investigating a shooting at a parking lot at East St. Louis High School.

This happened around 3 p.m. Tuesday in the 4900 block of State Street.

A city official says a student who was kicked out of East St. Louis High School and now attends an alternative school showed up as classes let out. That student got into a fight on the school parking lot with a current student. The alternative student was shot twice in the face by the East High student.

The victim was taken to a local hospital. At last check, that victim was in serious condition.

The suspect was arrested several blocks away.

Several other fights broke out at the school and several students were arrested. School officials had a feeling that tensions were running high inside the high school and had increased security. There were 20 security guards at the school and two dozen cops in the area.
