Man gets 18 years for tossing woman off bridge

ST. CHARLES, Ill. (AP) -- A suburban Chicago man convicted of tossing his then-girlfriend off a bridge has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Kane County Judge Allen Anderson mentioned 35-year-old Jonathan Zinke's history of violent behavior and substance abuse in sentencing him.

The judge also recommended that Zinke seek substance abuse treatment while he's in prison.

Zinke was convicted of attempted murder and aggravated battery in March for throwing his girlfriend off a bridge in downtown Aurora in November 2008 during an argument.

She fell at least 25 feet into the Fox River but was not seriously injured.

Authorities say drugs and alcohol were involved in the incident.

Zinke must serve 85 percent of his sentence.
