(KMOV) -- The controversial homeless camp in the tunnel under Tucker Avenue is empty.

The deadline for some 70 people living in tents there to leave was 8:00 a.m. on Friday.

In the next few weeks, the city will begin a $34 million project to improve parts of Tucker Avenue. The area where the homeless stayed will be a construction site.

The city says homeless advocate, Reverend Larry Rice encouraged homeless people from throughout the region to camp there against the city's wishes.
