JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A judge has denied a request for a central Missouri teenager to continue her education while awaiting trial for the killing of her 9-year-old neighbor.

Sixteen-year-old Alyssa Bustamante is charged as an adult with first-degree murder in last October's killing of Elizabeth Olten, whose body was found just west of Jefferson City. The teen's lawyers had requested that the Cole County Sheriff's Office pay for Bustamante to continue her education through a distance learning program.

Cole County Judge Patricia Joyce denied that request Tuesday. But Joyce did allow defense lawyers to file certain court motions that would not be available to prosecutors or the public.

Bustamante has pleaded not guilty and is in jail without bond.
