Light, smoke and shrapnel: Local army specialist's life changed forever

(KMOV) – The scourge of American service men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan is not enemy armies, but roadside bombs and grenades.

Army specialist Charles Schaffer of O’Fallon, Illinois knows this all too well. His combat mission ended in a flash of light, smoke and shrapnel in September of 2008.

Part of that story was captured on video by a fellow soldier that Shaffer shares here. The video is real, and a dramatic example of what troops experience on a regular basis.

**Warning: some viewers might find this story disturbing**

Note: Charles Shaffer and his father, Chip Shaffer, are active supporters of “Hope for Heroes,” an organization that provides supports for wounded veterans.
