(KMOV) -- A north St. Louis neighborhood called on the most unlikely group to get a helping hand in cleaning their community Saturday.
After five killing and shootings a few weeks ago, residents in the north St. Louis decided to try a new approach to end the violence by inviting gang members to join in cleaning up their neighborhood. A neighborhood shop keeper came up with the idea and hooked up gang member with a couple lawmakers.
Organizers said about 50 people came out today. They plan to keep going and clean up block by block of their neighborhood every weekend, making their way to a neighborhood that's home to another gang.
Lawmakers will meet with members of that neighboring community next week.
