KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A man accused of torturing his toddler son out of frustration could face upgraded charges after the boy was declared brain dead.
The Kansas City Star reported that prosecutors charged 19-year-old Rey A. Cruz Sr. on Thursday with assault and child endangerment. The 1-year-old boy was declared brain dead the next day.
Police said the boy's mother is in prison, and the boy lived with Cruz. They had been moving around, living with various friends and relatives.
Court records said the boy was found with bruises "all over his body," 10 fresh rib fractures, bruises to his genitals and hemorrhaging to his eyes.
