CLINTON COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – Authorities have identified two men whose bodies were recovered from Carlyle Lake this week.
The men were identified as 31-year-old Michael Septeowski, of Troy, Illinois, and 35-year-old Corey Gruenenfelder of Highland, Illinois.
Recovery efforts on the Illinois lake started early Sunday morning after the men went missing following an apparent boating accident late Saturday night.
The Army Corp of Engineers and Illinois Conservation Police found Septeowski’s body near the train trestle on the lake around 8 a.m. Monday. Sgt. Manker with the Illinois Conservation Police Department said Gruenenfelder’s body was found just after 7 a.m. Tuesday. Authorities did not say where in the lake he was found.
Officials said the victims were with another man were in a boat on the east side of the lake near the Boulder access area around 10 p.m. Saturday when one of them went into the water.
Police said when he started having trouble staying afloat, a second man jumped in to help. A third man remained in the boat; however the boat was not anchored and may have started to drift.
When Septeowski and Gruenenfelder failed to surface, the man in the boat went for help.
Carlyle Lake is located about 50 miles east of St. Louis in Clinton County, Illinois.
Autopsies will be performed to determine the victims’ cause of death for each victim.
