ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- Todd Akin appeared in St. Louis and in front of microphones Monday morning saying he will stay in the race for Senate in Missouri despite calls for him to exit.

The St Louis County Congressman did an interview on KMOX radio and then talked with News 4 outside the studio.

“The poll that matters is the one in November,” Akin said this morning.

A News 4 and Post Dispatch poll show Akin trailing Democratic incumbent Senator Claire McCaskill by 9 points.

Akin admits the Republican backlash against him has been aggressive in the wake of his comments about rape and abortion. Akin was told by other GOP partners that he was not welcome at the Republican National Convention this week in Tampa, Florida.  “I’ve always been respectful of my colleagues and that’s why I’m here (in Missouri),” Akin said when asked about the convention.

Akin is largely going through the campaign without support from Republicans.  He is receiving support from Christian based organizations and a faction of conservatives.  Akin is raising money through donations on his website, but is expected to be outspent by McCaskill.
