CAHOKIA, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- Police have arrested a man accused of shooting his wife and son inside their Cahokia home Saturday morning.
Cahokia Police were called to the 500 block of Cooper Drive around 5 a.m. to help a suspect who was shot and needed medical attention. When they arrived they found Jason Sumpter had been shot in the back and he told police his mother had been as well.
After further investigation, police found Tina Sumpter dead with a gun shot wound to the head. Jason Sumpter was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The investigation led officers to Ovie Sumpter, 57, Tina Sumpter's husband, as a person of interest. Cahokia Police dispatched his description along with a description of his vehicle to other agencies.
Ovie Sumpter was pulled over on Highway 67 just south of Interstate 55.
The investigation was turned over to the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office. Warrants against Ovie Sumpter have been issued for 1st degree murder, attempted 1st degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm.
Ovie Sumpter is being held on $3,000,000 bond in Missouri and is awaiting extradition back to Illinois.
