ST. PETERS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- The city of Florissant is once again rallying to support a police officer shot in the line of duty.

Officer Mike Vernon was shot while tracking a burglary suspect on Memorial Day. The shooting left him paralyzed, and a community wanting to help.

This weekend, the "Unsung Heroes Soccer Organization" will host a soccer tournament at the Gametime Sportsplex in St. Peters. Organizers say all proceeds from the event will go to Officer Vernon, who has been in rehabilitation and learning to get around in a wheelchair.

The tournament runs from Friday through Sunday, with each team of eight players donating $300.

According to the organization's website, "Unsung Heroes" is completely staffed by volunteers who are passionate about serving their communities.
