One man dead following Maryland Heights sewer rescue

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. (KMOV) – A 46-year-old sewer worker is dead and another is injured after one man became unresponsive and the other became light headed while working in an 18-foot hole.

The victim has been identified as Daniel Accola of Robertsville, Missouri.

The incident happened around 9:50 on Monday morning. Authorities said three men were working on a sewer in the 1900 block of Basston in Maryland Heights when one of the workers became unresponsive. When another worker checked on the unconscious worker, he became light headed.

Rescue crews were called to the scene to assist the men. The two affected workers were taken to St. John's Hospital. Emergency crews said they are not sure if the incident was work or medical related.

Representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Metropolitan Sewer District are on the scene investigating.
