Police identify 5 people killed after hitting a tree in North St. Louis

(KMOV)—Police have identified the victims killed after their car lost control on Interstate 70 Friday night

According to police, the red Pontiac Grand Prix lost control crossing three lanes on the eastbound lanes of 1-70 near Shreve. Witnesses say the car crashed through a fence and then struck a tree around 11:20p.m.

Those killed in the accident have been identified as Ernez Merriweather, 17, Queen Kelly, 16, Traceono Thompson, 4, and D’Anthony Newbie died at the scene; Tevin Wright, 35, later died at the hospital.

A 22-year-old female is still listed in critical condition at a local hospital. Police have not released her name at this time.

The accident forced the highway to be shut down for hours, reopening around 4 a.m. on Saturday.

The investigation as to why this happened is ongoing.
