ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Missouri transportation officials plan to use a St. Louis highway to test a new type of concrete that can absorb smog.

The Missouri Department of Transportation says the concrete will contain an additive that helps it absorb smog, then uses sunlight to break it down, and releases it as nitrogen and carbon dioxide.

Plans call for the concrete to be poured on a 1,500-foot section of Missouri 141 in the St. Louis area.
The department says the concrete already has been used in Europe but is new in the United States.
