EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- A robbery suspect ended his southwestern Illinois trial as jury selection was unfolding and pleaded guilty before being sentenced to a decade in prison.
An Alton, Illinois news agency reports that Vontra Ford, 30, of Granite City pleaded guilty Tuesday to aggravated robbery.
Authorities say Ford robbed a woman after she'd stopped at a Madison convenience store and then fled with $14.
Ford was arrested two hours later after the victim gave police the suspect's description and insisted she owed him money for drugs. But prosecutors believe the case was mistaken identity, saying the victim wasn't a criminal and didn't do drugs.
Ford's criminal record dates to 1999, when he was sentenced to four years in prison for residential burglary.
