(KMOV) – Two elementary school students are recovering after being hit by a car at a bus stop in De Soto.
Police say the driver went right through the stop sign, and some area bus drivers say the problem is so prevalent that it threatens every child who rides a bus.
Bus company and school representatives say this happens everywhere and that cars are passing buses letting kids on and off instead of stopping.
The penalties for doing this are steep. Both Illinois and Missouri call for a 90-day suspension of a driver’s license, but that does not always stop drivers.
Missouri law does allow bus drivers to report the license plates of offending cars. Police have been involved in the effort to stop people from running bus traffic signs, but it is impossible for police to catch everyone.
