(KMOV) -- A daycare director is shot dead -- right in front of his own home. News 4 told you about the murder in North St. Louis County on Monday. By Tuesday, police say they are hitting a dead end.
They have no motive and no suspect, and they need help.
Xavier Ferguson, 46, was leaving for work just before 6 a.m. Monday when police say he was gunned down in his driveway. They say Ferguson collapsed at his front door as he tried to make his way inside, where his wife and a 4-year-old girl were unaware he'd been shot.
Police are having a hard time piecing this one together.
"He was either confronted by someone waiting for him or confronted by someone randomly," St. Louis County Police Officer Rick Eckhard said. "We don't know if this was a targeted suspect/victim situation or if it was random."
Ferguson owned a daycare called The Chapel Praise Rich & Little Daycare on Shreve in North St. Louis. According to court documents obtained by News 4, Ferguson had an altercation with a nearby business owner last year that got him arrested. Just four months ago, he pleaded guilty to second-degree arson and second-degree burglary of a hair salon two doors down from his daycare. Ferguson was put on probation and ordered to pay restitution to the salon. He never served jail time.
Police do not believe that case has any connection to his death. Police want to avoid a dead-end investigation, which they say, puts everyone at risk.
"As more time goes on, it's going to give someone more of an opportunity to get out of the area or cover his or her tracks," Officer Eckhard said.
