News 4 Investigates: Leaded Yards

Imagine living in a gated community surrounded by large trees, beautiful lakes and a country club. Not bad, huh?

Now, imagine that your yard is contaminated with an unsafe amount of lead, a toxic metal that can be extremely dangerous to young children. High levels of lead poisoning can cause brain damage.

Some of the yards in Raintree Plantation, which is the Jefferson County, Missouri development I just described, are undergoing testing for lead, and the levels are so high in some yards that the EPA is digging up the grass and top soil, then replacing it for free.

The contaminated top soil came from low lands bordering the Big River, which is filled with sediment from lead mining.

The EPA has held meetings, sent out fliers and contacted the media to help contact people about the problem. You can get the testing and soil replacement for free, but the government will not replace any trees, bushes and flowers damaged during the digging.
