I grabbed a few girlfriends and checked out this show at the Fox Theatre last night. I'm sure you're at least a bit familiar with it...everyone's heard of the Rockettes, right? Now it's not Rockettes the whole time, but they are certainly the stars of the show with their signature high kicks and perfect choreography! Did you know they do 300 eye-high kicks per show?
The Christmas Spectacular debuted in 1933 and took on it's all-live 90 minute current format in 1979. My favorite scenes? Definitely the one with the Rockettes as wooden toy soldiers. The precision is something to see! Also the live nativity is quite a sight. Live sheep and camels come trotting across the stage. I was just waiting for the animals to act up, but no such thing happened.
Santa is featured prominently as well as Mrs. Claus and the elves. And I can't forget the toys that come to life, and the really fun Nutcracker scene with the dancing bears. I can't imagine what the costume department must be like, 1300 costumes per show! The set is anything but minimalist, very unlike the last show I saw at the Fox.
The show is a fun, festive thing to do. It certainly get you in the holiday spirit, as if you weren't there already! The kids will love it, but so will you. Young and old alike filled the theatre and enjoyed the show.
There is something to be said for the Fox too. It's such a beautiful, ornate place, it's hard not to have a great time there. Next time you go, just spend some time hanging out in the lobby taking it all in. All I can say is wow!
If you'd like to see the show, it's playing through December 28th, here's the website for times, tickets and more!
