Connect With...Spotlight Of The Week: The Young Literati

Did you know the library has a young professionals group? It's called the Young Literati of the SLPLF (St. Louis Public Library Foundation). It is a diverse group of young professionals ages 20s - 40s. Its mission is to enhance the life and vitality of the Library by supporting its programs and building relationships with others who share a passion for the Library's work.

Here's something else I bet you didn't know: the Library has been ranked in the top five urban libraries in the nation for the past five years. This has contributed to St. Louis being named as one of the most literate cities in the nation and led to Mayor Slay naming April 15, 2008 St. Louis Public Library Day. All of this helps support St. Louis's movement toward becoming one of the nation's major cultural centers.

The Young Literati have only been around since last June but have hosted several events already. There was an open house reception as well as a reception at Art St. Louis where an author and book were paired with the current art exhibit. The Young Literati also presented Friday Night Fright and hosted the after party for the Library's Winter White Gala.

Young Literati and friends gathered at downtown's Central Library for a night of "spooky" fun at the Young Literati's annual Friday Night Fright.

Guests of Friday Night Fright met mystery author, Angie Fox, went on scavenger hunts and enjoyed appetizers and drinks at downtown's Central Library.

This year, expect more author receptions, opportunities to volunteer with the Library's children's programs and other events at the Library designed to engage the community and showcase all the Library has to offer.

To meet the Young Literati and find out more about this group, join them for Cocktails for a Cause, sponsored by The Riverfront Times on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Jake's Steak on Laclede's Landing. The cost is $10 which supports The Young Literati and includes complimentary drinks.
