I went to the Missouri Botanical Garden a few times last summer for their Whitaker Music Festival. If you're not familiar, it's a weekly, free outdoor concert series all summer long. People picnic on the lawn and it draws a huge crowd. But that was about as familiar with the Garden as I got. I had no idea they had a young friends group until recently.
The mission of the Missouri Botanical Garden Young Friends is to further advance the mission of the Garden, to discover and share knowledge about plants and their environment in order to preserve and enrich life, by engaging and educating a diverse group of young professionals (yps), ages 21 - 45, within the St. Louis community.
The Young Friends hosted Fest-of-Ale this past October. It was such a success that it will be repeated this October. Details will be coming soon. In addition to providing networking opportunities, the Young Friends also participate in a number of volunteer outreach initiatives, including Chinese Culture Days, the Japanese Festival and Best of Missouri Market, held annually at the Garden, and the Green Homes & Renewable Energy Festival held at the EarthWays Center.
The Garden offers several other events and activities in which yps can participate. Not only the Whitaker Music Festival mentioned above, but also special evening programming, and educational classes that feature a variety of topics including cooking, wine tasting and gardening. The goal is to develop and maintain programs specifically for the Young Friends group to increase members and visitors to the Garden.
The Young Friends next event will be Trivia Night - Garden Style, on Saturday, February 28 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Questions are of general knowledge. There will be cash prizes awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, attendance prizes and mulligans available. Tickets include complimentary beer provided by Schlafly Beer and complimentary hors d'oeuvres. There will also be a cash bar available. The cost is $200 for a table of 10. To register, call (314) 577-9432 or e-mail email@example.com.
