The Young Friends of the Saint Louis Science Center is a diverse group of individuals dedicated to the success of the Science Center. The goals of the Young Friends are to increase the awareness of the Science Center's mission among young adults, enhance the volunteer base of the Science Center and create additional revenue for the Science Center through membership and fund raising. Another goal of the Young Friends organization is to raise awareness and funding to support the Science Center's outreach programs for area children, schools and community centers.
In the past, they've held trivia nights, participated in Connect With... events, and sponsored Young Friends nights during major Science Center exhibitions - like SciFest. They plan to get more involved in the Science Center's YES program (Youth Exploring Science) - an amazing opportunity for high schoolers to get four years of hands-on education in science, math and technology, but also for them to learn life and job skills that they can take with them.
The Run for the Stars is their biggest event. It's coming up on June 6 and is the 11th annual race. The race benefits the Science Center's educational programs and is for all levels of participants including individuals, children, families and groups. Participants can choose from a 5K wheelchair race, a 5K run/walk, a 10K run and a 1/2 mile Kids Run. The day of the race, activities for kids will include inflatables, science experiments and access to the Science Center. The 5K wheelchair race kicks off at 7:50 a.m., followed by the 5K run/walk and the 10K run at 8 a.m., then the 1/2 mile Kids Run at 9:30 a.m. All races begin at the Planetarium. Awards will go to overall winners in each category as well as the top three finishers in all age groups. For more on the race and to register, click here.
