Early morning accident has police examining safety in downtown St. Charles

ST. CHARLES, Mo (KMOV.com) -- A 28-year-old St. Charles man is dead after losing control of his vehicle around 1:30 Tuesday morning.

The crash happened on Second Street in downtown St. Charles, just one block from historic Main Street where there have been safety concerns.

Police tell News 4 this accident has them ready to act.

News four first told you about a safety concern among people who live near the city’s popular Main Street entertainment district.“At night when the bars close, the alcoholics drive through here” said resident Noel Steinmann Less than a week later, 28-year-old David Crawford died in a fatal accident.  Police have not determined if alcohol is a factor in the crash, but they do say he was speeding.

Crawford was driving one street up from Main—where he’d been out with friends.

“The car appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed and flipped over and landed in the parking lot,” said Lt. Dave Senter with the St. Charles Police Department.

Crawford was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. Police said last week they didn’t know safety on Second Street was a concern; but since then they’ve been compiling data from the area.

“We literally have people working on it as we speak,” said Senter.

And after this morning’s deadly accident, he says it could be time to make a change.

“It may very well dictate that we’re going to need to allocate some resources to that area and try dealing with a problem that unfortunately until now we didn’t know existed.”
