ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV) -- Police say a man arrested after a standoff with police in Bellefontaine Neighbors on Friday has been charged with shooting an officer.
Dominic Hamptiol, 26, was charged with first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and armed criminal action
According to authorities, officers were called to a convenience store in the 8800 block of N. Broadway around 1:30 a.m. in reference to a suspicious person wanted for a robbery two weeks ago. Officers arrived on the scene, and while one officer was exiting his vehicle, the suspect pulled out a handgun and started shooting. Police then returned fire.
The officer suffered a graze wound to the upper-left arm. He remained on the scene, but was later transported to a hospital for treatment.
Police say Hamptiol then fled on foot after wounding the officer.
Authorities described the suspect as being a black male, 5’10” in height with a medium to thin build. He was last seen wearing blue shirt and khaki pants.
Officers later on Friday responded to a home on St. Cyr Street near Danforth Elementary School and surrounded the home with guns drawn.
Hamptiol was eventually seen walking out of the home with his hands up after a little over an hour of being posted outside the home. He was taken into custody.
Officials said three other people exited the home with their hands up, but were not arrested.
A team of officers with high-power rifles entered the home a short time later. Officials did not say if they found anyone else inside.
Melanie Powell-Robinson with the Riverview Gardens School District said Danforth Elementary students were taken to another campus in the district as a precaution during the manhunt. The school was eventually given the go-ahead to return to the school and classes were back in progress by around 9:40 a.m.
Hamptiol is being held on a $150,000 cash-only bond.
