FREEBURG, Il (KMOV.com) – Two Metro East police officers have been dismissed from duty on accusations of helping themselves to the evidence locker.

Freeburg Mayor Ray Danford confirmed to News 4 that Steve Burrows and John Blomenkamp were dismissed by the Village Board last night. Burrows was dismissed by a vote of 4-2 and Blomenkamp by 4-3.

Mayor Danford says they have video of the two officers entering the evidence room and retrieving a DVD of an automobile accident.

Danford says the officers had seen that video, but were told they wouldn’t be able to view it once it was put into evidence pending the investigation.

The mayor says they had the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office investigate for the city.  The Sheriff’s Office gave the city the findings and that led to the dismissal.

Danford says criminal charges were recommended to the district attorney and are being reviewed.

Blomenkamp is the president of Freeburg District 70 School Board. Both officers have filed union grievances which is the first step in an appeal.
