ST. LOUIS (BaseballStL) – The Cardinals series win against the Mets was an impressive feat despite it coming against a team that is nowhere close to the playoff hunt.
The Mets entered Busch Stadium on Monday as one of the hottest teams in baseball and were beaten by a Cardinals team that was coming off a rather disappointing ten-game road trip against the Reds, Pirates and Nationals. It was exactly what the Cardinals needed after posting a 4-6 record during the trip.
The Mets started the series eight games out of both the NL East and wild-card lead and were poised to play the role of spoiler as they won seven of their previous eight games prior to the series against the Cardinals. The Mets had also won three straight series for the first time since September 7, 2011 – a streak snapped by a streaking Cardinals team that remains in the playoff picture despite having an anything but consistent season.
The Mets were able to salvage one win in the three-game set with the help of Cy Young candidate R.A. Dickey. The knuckleballer, who has led an impressive starting staff this season, allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits in 6.2 innings pitched on Wednesday.
Now the Mets head back to New York to play the NL wild-card leading Braves on Friday with their heads hung low and their role of spoiler in question.
