Local superintendent placed on leave

HAZELWOOD (KMOV.com)  - The superintendent of the Hazelwood School District has been placed on administrative leave.

Dr. Steve Price is on administrative leave as attorneys negotiate a separation agreement. Smith earns one of the largest salaries in St. Louis are among school administrators, $235,000 a year. His contract also includes 180 days of sick days up front even though current district policy only allows 13 days of sick time at the beginning of a tenure.

In 2010, News 4 confronted the district's board as to why Price's contract had so many perks.

"We wanted to attract the most qualified individual and we know Dr. Price is that individual," said former Hazelwood School Board President Desiree Whitlock. "We are the second largest school district in St. Louis County. There is a lot of accountability placed upon him. We have high expectations of him and want to retain him at any cost," Whitlock said.

Dr. Grayling Tobias is taking over as Acting Superintendent and Administrator Dr. Ingrid Clark-Jackson moves into the number two slot.
