COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- Illinois State Police seized just over $34,000 and discovered an illegal immigrant during a traffic stop on southbound I-55 Wednesday.
According to a trooper, he pulled a 2011 Toyota over for following too closely and during the investigation the trooper believe something criminal was going on leading the trooper to search the vehicle.
The trooper found $34,171 during the search. The driver and passenger in the car did not claim to know anything about the money.
Captain Brad Parsons of the Illinois State Police commented on the seizure saying, “I don’t know of too many people who have over $34,000 just lying around. If you do have that much cash and you have it for a legitimate reason, most people don’t take the time to vacuum seal it and then deny ownership of the money,”
The driver is an illegal immigrant and is being held pending deportation by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The passenger was released.
