GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOV) – Police in Granite City are searching for a burglar who was caught on camera trying to break into a convenience store on Monday.

In the video, which is 14 minutes long, the suspect can be seen trying several ways to break into the Corner Market on East 24th Street.

He tried kicking in the door, using wire cutters on a door cage and then a tire iron. But the place was locked up tight.

Police said they believe the man is behind several burglaries in Granite City over the last several months. They said he is usually able to disable the security cameras.

“Some of those other crimes the DVR was removed from the business and we felt that may be part of the reason he tried so hard to get in here because these cameras are no covert, they are overt cameras,” said Major Jeff Connor with the Granite City Police Department.

Police said during the latest incident the man managed to cut the phone lines to stop the alarms.

They believe the pictures may give him away now.

Police said they someone recognizes him and calls in a tip before he tries anything else.
