ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- Ellie, one of the Saint Louis Zoo’s Asian elephants, is pregnant with her third calf.
Ellie has two other daughters, 6-year-old Maliha, 16-year-old Rani. Ellie is also the grandmother of Rani’s daughter, Kenzi, who was born in June 2011.
Now in her third trimester, Ellie is carrying another female calf. Ellie is due to deliver in the spring of 2013. The father is 19-year old Raja, the first Asian elephant ever born at the zoo in 1992.
Elephant pregnancies last around 22 months. Ellie has been receiving regular prenatal health checkups and is following a customized exercise plan to prepare her for the rigorous delivery.
Newborn elephants weigh around 250 to 350 pounds.
Ellie lives with 8 other elephants, including her three-generation family, at the Zoo’s River’s Edge habitat.
