Man accused of tampering with equipment to get free fuel at Metro-East gas station

FAIRVIEW, Ill. (KMOV) -- A man was arrested after he allegedly tampered with equipment to get free fuel from a Fairview Heights gas station on Thursday.
Antaeaus Washington, 21, was charged with burglary and attempted retail theft.
According to police, a driver saw Washington on the roof of the BP gas station in the 6400 block of N. Illinois around 11 a.m. Authorities said the witness called police after seeing Washington get out of a car parked in the parking lot with two other men inside.
Police said officers arrived shortly and found the vehicle with two occupants inside. They then realized Washington, who had climbed on the roof, fled the scene. He was found a short time later across the street in another store.
Authorities investigated the incident and discovered Washington had tampered with the gas station' electrict communications equipment in an attempted to get free fuel.
According to police, Washington had an outstanding felony warrant through another Illinois jurisdiction.
