Police: UMSL student, boyfriend set vehicle on fire to get out of payments

NORMANDY, Mo. (KMOV) – Authorities say a University of Missouri-St. Louis student and her boyfriend lit her vehicle on fire to get out of her payments, then lied to police about it.

The student initially told police she was walking to the Mansion Hills Apartments on Normandy Trace Drive around 2 a.m. when she was approached by a man.

She said the man told her she had a gun and wanted her vehicle.

The vehicle was found a short time later after being set on fire near the intersection of Stranton and Riverview.

Police initially were looking for a suspect in the case, but the woman on Tuesday admitted to making up the story.

During the confession, she told police she and her boyfriend set the vehicle on fire to get out of car payments.

Additional information was not immediately available.
